Promotion of Gender Equality

The TR32 implements strategic measures to increase the number of female research scientists and principal investigators utilizing auxiliary and core support. Focus is placed on the promotion of female postdoctoral scholars with the potential of advancing to the senior scientist level.

The different measures include:

(i) Postdocs and Positions as Principal Investigators

(ii) Funding for PhD students

(ii) Funding for PhD students

Female postdocs are encouraged to submit independent research plans for a PhD student over a three year period working on a topic scientifically relevant to the TR32. The research plans will be evaluated by the TR32 Directorate. The postdoc will - together with a university professor - be responsible for the supervision and progress of the PhD student and will thus have the opportunity to establish a small research group. Funding will be provided by the gender equality funds (30k€) matched by an equal amount from the lump sum funds. Depending on the number of submitted research plans, additional funding will be allocated from the strategic financial sources.

(iii) Extended Stays at International Partner Institutions

In order to improve scientific career perspectives and networking opportunities of female postdocs, there are opportunities for an extended stay of up to one year at an international partner institution. The TR32 maintains excellent connections to a large number of internationally recognized research institutes. The postdoc will be continuously funded by the TR32 including an additional allowance for travel, lodging and additional expenses provided from the lumped sum funds.

(iv) Individual Career Coaching

To ensure continuity with regard to the other promotion measures, female scientists are encouraged to submit proposals for independent research groups, such as the DFG Emmy Noether program. The research groups are fully integrated into the TR32 research plan. Proposals are prepared under the close guidance of TR32 PIs and individual career coaches.

To support the efforts of the CRC TR32 in its gender mainstreaming policy the faculty of mathematics and natural science of the University of Bonn and the rectorate of the University of Cologne finance additionally two PhD positions for the research groups of Dr. Ahrends and Dr. Rihani.
